"Presentation Of The Fare Was Very Good"

This was our first visit to Madeira and we went with some trepidation following the violent storms, flooding and land-slides that had affected the South side of the island. We arrived about 12 days after the trouble and were amazed how well the local people had coped with the clean-up particularly in Funchal

Our hotel was largely unaffected apart from the swimming pool by the sea which was out of action for the first few days. We were on bed and breakfast terms but ate dinner in the hotel on three occasions. The quality and presentation of the fare was very good.

We spent one day on an organised excursion to the West side of the island but because the weather was poor the visibility was dreadful for most of the journey. We had a satisfactory lunch at Porto Moniz where the weather was really good but we were then taken to Calheta on the South coast where it was pouring with rain. We spent forty minutes wandering in the wet which was not very pleasant. The tour operator should have been more flexible and allowed us to spend longer in Porto Moniz to see more of what appeared to be a rather nice place especially in the sunshine.

We ate in three local restaurants and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the attentive service we received. We would consider returning to Madeira although we would probably want more of a walking holiday next time and would go later in the year. We also visited a number of gardens which was most enjoyable but would probably be more spectacular in May/June.

The service from Thomson was good. We were greeted on arrival at the airport and taken to our taxi. We expected to see a Thomson representative at departure but although no one was there, we didn't need help.

"Bathrooms Are Sumptuous"

Rooms are incredibly large and bathrooms are sumptuous. Quality of linens is excellent as well as all the fabrics. Pastel colours in a comfortable environment, classical and never out-of-date.

By virtue of the typical customers profile, in Madeira Island and particularly in this high priced hotel, rather elder and looking for peaceful rest, silence and elegance is a mark of this hotel, maybe not the most suitable for very active children. Excellent SPA, terrific location over the sea (one of the best sea access in the world), one star Michelin restaurant, great breakfast, beautiful gardens and gorgeous sights, with a professional and experienced service, makes this hotel one of the World's Best Hotels.

Some small improvements could include new chairs for the swimming pool with actual design.

"Temperature Around 25C But Humid"

We've booked a hotel pick up from the airport (80 Euro/return) before travelling. We were expected to be picked up by a hotel car, instead a taxi driver picked us up and we were taken to the hotel in a taxi, without air-conditioning. The taxi driver was miserable and was not very polite. On the day we were leaving, we asked the receptionist what time the taxi was going to pick us up. She told us he would pick us up at 9:15 am. After we'd checked out, the receptionist told us to wait for the taxi in front of the hotel. So we did, but there were no sign of the taxi driver. We asked the receptionist where the taxi was, she just told us that it's coming. There was no help from the desk at all. We were a bit anxious as we had a plane to catch; besides, if we did not pay in advance for the transfer, we would have got any taxi we want outside the hotel and much cheaper. We had paid over the odds for the transfer, at least the hotel staff should had given us some help and support. The taxi did turn up after 15 minutes; it was the same miserable driver!

Besides, before we travelled, we requested for a quiet room, but when we checked in, the receptionist gave us a room above the bar. She did change the room for us later on, but we had to stand in front of the desk for 40 minutes before they sorted out the rooms.

The visit was okay. It was not a 5 star service that we had expected. The neighbouring hotel had a party by the pool and the music was clearly heard from our hotel. It lasted till 10:45pm.

The weather was okay, but very windy though. Temperature around 25C but humid, we could smell the damp in our room.

The prices of the spa were ridiculous expensive. So overpriced.

We had stayed there before this trip, but we are not sure we go back there next time.

"Relaxing Week At The Cliff Bay"

We're just back from a very relaxing week at the Cliff Bay which we found to be deserving of its 5 stars and absolutely immaculate. We had paid extra for a sea view and balcony - well worth it. It felt very luxurious to have the Atlantic Ocean just 4 floors below and it was lovely to fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing in the very pretty bay. Great views across to the harbour. Spacious, beautiful room.

A mixture of age groups were there but very few small children so ideal for those looking for peace and quiet. We found the small number of parents with little kids were very good at making sure they weren't disturbing other guests. It's very much a place where you'll be right at home by the pool, looking out to sea and chomping through great holiday reading.

We didn't make use of the spa as it was pricey, although looked to be lovely.Breakfast in the Rose Garden was fabulous and made particularly enjoyable by the fact that we were able to sit out on the terrace each morning. There is a huge array of food which caters for every taste and nationality - allow yourself a good hour!Restaurant staff were very helpful and attentive. By contrast, whilst efficient, we found the reception staff rather less than friendly. We didn't deal with them very frequently but thought this was a shame.

We ate just once in the same restaurant for one of the themed buffets (Italian, Wednesday night). Again, gorgeous food with masses of choice although it's hard to stuff yourself in hot weather. Pricey at 36 Euros pp (without drinks) but nice if you can't be bothered going out to eat. The two best meals we had were at E Pre Pirhana (10 min stroll from the hotel) and Riso (in the old town, on a cliff looking out to sea). Allow 50-60 Euros for two people.

Allow a good half hour to stroll into Funchal and bear in mind that it's quite a steep hike back. There is a hotel courtesy bus but its timetable is a little limited and you need to book the day before which is rather less than ideal. The last bus runs at around 5.30pm - a shame it isn't extended a little later to allow you to get into town for dinner. There are loads of taxis (4-5 Euros to get from the hotel into Funchal and not much less if you get the bus, in fact).

Drinks/snacks at the hotel are not cheap (made worse by the fact you you're not getting as many Euros to the pound as this time last year) but in line with 5 star hotel prices, I suppose. Don't order a margarita - quite the worst we've ever tasted and obviously not made with fresh lime juice!

There is an awful lot of sunbed 'reserving' (and it wasn't just the Germans!!). We were surprised and disappointed that the hotel didn't ask guests not to do this (we've seen this done in other hotels and it works well). A great many people put towels down before breakfast and then didn't appear for some hours; they then had a habit of leaving their bagged spaces over lunch/siesta. We couldn't bring ourselves to do it so were a bit limited in where we could go. The sunbeds themselves are lovely (wicker) with comfy mattresses and there were plenty of parasols. I did have a rather heated exchange with a German lady who was cross with me for taking 'her' parasol (she wasn't there at the time and I felt leaving her with 2 parasols for her 4 'reserved' sunbeds was sufficient) so maybe it would have been better to go along with the whole "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" thing!!

Madeira is a beautiful, friendly island and we were very taken with how spotless everything was. Lovely tiled/cobbled pavements with not a shred of litter or glob of chewing gum in sight - why can't we manage that?!

Overall, a super holiday in a really lovely hotel that we would certainly recommend and intend to return to some day.

"Absolutely Superb In Every Aspect"

We first visited the Cliff Bay last year in 2006 and had the best holiday ever. Decided to return again and on our 2nd visit to this hotel, it even out surpassed the first time.

Absolutely superb in every aspect, hotel exceedingly clean and comfortable, staff could not be more pleasant, have no hesitation in recommending this as the best hotel we have ever stayed in and will return again.

The buffet breakfasts were to die for, everything you could wish for always being replenished and nothing a problem, the buffet evenings meals - themed each evening, some were better than others but again the food as hot and fresh each time.

Bar prices were what you would expect to pay for in a hotel so nothing new there but staff were very polite and could not do enough for you.

Plenty of sunbeds and towels whichever pool you visited, there was one swim in and out of by the spa and one freshwater down by sea level with a children's pool area again plenty of sunbeds available.

Plenty of choice of food if you wished to use the other restaurants and the reception staff were very helpful whatever.

A must to visit if you want a relaxing atmosphere, no stress and no children!!
