Hotel Four Views Monumental Lido, Funchal

The Hotel Four Views Monumental Lido sits at the top of the lido area in the resort of Funchal. Not particularly pleasing to look at from the road, this hotel offers so much more once your inside.

This 4 star hotel will delight them most discerning holidaymaker and offer you a truly relaxing time on the island of Madeira.

Busy road & shopping complex outside with the main bus stop.

"Buffet Was Excellent"

We spent a lovely week in Madeira in July, the Monumental Lido hotel was excellent value with a handy location just a mile's walk from Funchal city centre.

We stayed half board at the hotel and the buffet was excellent every day-though breakfast choice was a bit limited depending what time we ate. However the dinner was always good-try the local Espada fish, served with fried banana-delicious. There was also a bbq one night which was fun.

The facilities at the hotel were also excellent, I particularly liked the spa with indoor pool as I can't tolerate too much sun and it was a peaceful haven to escape to on an afternoon when the sun was at its hottest. The kids loved the outdoor pool and the games room.

Funchal itself is a beautiful city, from the marina with its flashy boats to the serenity of the cathedral. For lunch or just a drink, try the Cafe do Teatro and the Cafe do Museo which are popular with locals and very good value.

We visited the water park at Santa Cruz which the kids really enjoyed it cost 24 euro for a family of 4 (kids over 12 classed as adults) and we got there by bus from the Funchal marina (SAM bus line no.208) -a good value and fun day out. Also worth a visit is the little village of Monte, many people go there by cable car but this is quite expensive the 48 bus takes you from outside the hotel and the journey is spectacular. We came back down in a wicker toboggan, one of Madeira's big tourist attractions which was great. However be warned, when you get dropped off you will be besieged by taxi drivers charging 20 euro into town, ignore this and just walk straight down towards Funchal it's a downhill 20 minute walk. I would recommend Madeira and particularly the Monumental Lido hotel as a family holiday for older kids or teenagers, or anyone who is fit and enjoys walking up and down hills!

"Food Was A Little Bland"

My wife and I spent a week in this hotel in September. It is furnished in an art deco style. Our room was adequate, although I find it strange that a kettle was provided, but no tea or coffee.

The standard of cleaning was good. We were on the road side, which could be noisy with the locals shouting at each other in the early hours or tearing around on mopeds.

The food was a little bland and 'samey', although there was a good choice of salad and puddings. We could have done with a few exotic dishes - such as chilli or curry. They had this curious table allocation system which we were unaware with. When eventually it was sorted out we were sat next to the only couple in the hotel who did not speak a word of English! Probably as a punishment for sitting in the 'wrong' place.

You did get the towels on the sun loungers, a practice which I thought died out sometime in the 1980's. I just threw them off and sat down. The pool area was nice. The evening entertainment was a little bland, sort of 'Europop music'. The drinks were expensive.

The Island itself is lovely. We went on a couple of Strawberry World (situated next door to the hotel) tours, which were terrific. The trip up to Monte is also worth a visit. I would go back to Madeira in the future, but not to this hotel.

"Madeira Is An Up-Market Destination "

Madeira was wonderful, friendly and quiet which is what we wanted as we are in our forties. The location of the hotel could not have been better, close to bus services and an easy walk into Funchal centre.

The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful, but we felt that the four star rating was a little over-the-top for this particular hotel, which fell below usual four star standards. The room was clean and we had a nice sea view which we paid extra for but it was well worth it. However, the bed was so hard that we had to ask staff to do something about it (they put sunbeds from outside on top of our mattresses and made the bed over these). We complained to the Thomson Rep, who tried his best but he said this was an ongoing complaint. We both returned to UK with aching backs. The pillows were flat and offered no support.

The dining experience was more holiday camp than four star. The table we were allocated each night was dirty upon arrival to the dining room (20.00 each night) and we had to wait a long time for a set table. Food was buffet, and had I have known or realised this I would not have booked this hotel. Often they had run out of fish and there was a long wait. My partner is a vegetarian and there was no vegetarian option other than meatless salad or vegetables. We were assured vegetarian options would be available but most nights the pasta contained meat or fish. The cleanliness of the dining room left a lot to be desired, and we witnessed the staff putting out the milk for the breakfast in jugs covered with cling film, so this was sitting out all night, as was the bread. On the brighter side, the round about restaurants of which there are many, were inexpensive and very good. We opted to eat out when there was no veggie option on the menu but as we had paid for half board this substantially added to the cost of our holiday.

During the second week the hotel next door began to put on outdoor Karaoke, which went on until after midnight, and could be heard reverberating through our room and we were unable to sleep, and we complained to the management. After all, Madeira is an up-market destination and geared to older people so we were dismayed that the neighbouring hotel found this a fitting activity. We had come to enjoy the charm and peaceful tranquillity Madeira has to offer, and will definitely return next year. However, I would only stay at a five star hotel based on this experience.

"The Show And The Band Is Superb"

Booked very last minute and bought flights through Thomson cost of £159 for 2 people. Then booked hotel through Greatlatedeals and studio apartment was only £220 for the both of us. If had booked through travel agent it would have cost double this.

The hotel is very nice and the reception staff friendly. There is building works adjoining the hotel and if you stay in the studios you will not enjoy sitting on the balcony, however, you hardly notice it by the pool. The indoor pool is lovely and there is also use of the Jacuzzi included and a state of the art gym - be warned, you must have proper gym trainers or you can't use it.

There is a small shopping centre attached - another warning - do not buy your groceries from the mini supermarket within the complex the prices are inflated x 4. Turn right out of the hotel and there is a supermarket chain.

The food in the hotel is standard. 2 x choices of main meal and a salad buffet and also standard deserts. Cost of 12.50 Euros each with coffee and Madeira wine. Lots of restaurants around and the best Italian restaurant on the way down to the lido.

Beautiful walks along the sea front. No beach and very hilly. 30 minute walk into main town centre - nice church - cable car ride - very good. Lots of day trips on offer but you have to do a timeshare presentation to get the offer. We did it as we had a free evening to the casino show which would have cost 90 Euros. The food is great at the show and the band is superb.

The rooms had LCD TV, kitchenette, and good size bathroom with bath and shower. Very clean. TV channels in English - movie channels in English with Portuguese subtitles.

Weather was 20 degrees fantastic for January. Not recommended if you like to go out clubbing as there were no pubs or clubs. Can go in and out of other hotels and see the entertainment although duo was very good at Monumental Lido.
